Raising The Age of Marriage of Women in India: A Step Forward or Backward?

On December 15, 2021, the Union cabinet gave clearance to the proposal of raising the legal age of women for marriage from 18 to 21 years, making the legal marriage age of women at par with the legal marriage age of men. This was done on the recommendation of Task Force report headed by Ms. Jaya Jaitly, former President of the Samata Party, so appointed by the Ministry of Child & Women Development to examine the issue about the age of motherhood, imperatives of lowering maternal mortality rates and improvement of nutritional levels along with other incidental issues in the previous year.

Deepa Mohanan Controversy: The Open Secret of Caste-Based Discrimination in Indian educational System

The gravity of this matter very recently came to light when the news of the PhD student Deepa Mohanan, made headlines. She is a Dalit student from Kottayam’s Mahatma Gandhi University, who resorted to a 11-day hunger strike to get heard against the discrimination that she faced, both at an individual and institutional level, for over a decade. Her fight did yield results and the Director of the Institute who discriminated against her, was removed.

“Layered Oppression, Vertical Reservation” Trans Community Objects Govt’s Categorization Under The OBC Quota

Recently, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment sought the National Commission for Backward Classes’s advice on the issue of including transgender people in the OBC list. This move if implemented will amount to providing transgender persons ‘vertical reservations’ within the OBC community, effectively dispossessing them of their Constitutional Right of reservation under the already existing categories.
